Different School Calendars: A Unique Challenge for Freelancers in Japan/異なる学校カレンダー：日本で働くフリーランスならではの課題

For many freelancers working with international families in Japan, the end of the school year does not happen in March, but in June or July. While Japanese schools begin preparing for a new academic year in spring, many international schools follow Western calendars, creating a completely different rhythm for freelancers.

Teachers, music instructors, private tutors, translators, and other independent workers who mainly work with foreign clients often experience their busiest period at the beginning of summer. June becomes a time filled with final lessons, student performances, reports, exams, and end-of-year events. At the same time, many families begin preparing to leave Japan temporarily for the summer holidays.

This difference in schedules can sometimes feel strange for foreigners living in Japan. While Japanese society has already moved into the new fiscal and academic year in April, many international communities are only reaching the end of theirs.

For freelancers, this period requires flexibility and organization. Schedules can change quickly, and summer departures often mean adjusting workloads for several weeks. However, this season also creates meaningful moments. Final concerts, farewell parties, and graduation events often highlight the strong relationships built throughout the year.

Living in Japan while working with international communities means experiencing two calendars at once. In many ways, that balance becomes part of everyday freelance life. 日本で外国人家族と働く多くのフリーランスにとって、学年度末は3月ではなく、6月や7月に訪れます。日本の学校が春に新学期を迎える一方で、多くのインターナショナルスクールは欧米式のカレンダーを採用しており、フリーランスにとって全く異なるリズムが生まれます。

特に、教師、音楽講師、家庭教師、翻訳者など、外国人クライアントを中心に働くフリーランスにとって、初夏は最も忙しい時期の一つです。6月になると、最後のレッスン、発表会、成績報告、試験、年度末イベントなどが続きます。同時に、多くの家族が夏休みのために一時的に日本を離れる準備を始めます。

このスケジュールの違いは、日本で暮らす外国人にとって不思議に感じられることもあります。日本社会では4月からすでに新年度が始まっていますが、国際的なコミュニティでは、まだ年度末を迎えている最中だからです。

フリーランスにとって、この時期には柔軟性と計画性が必要です。予定が急に変わることも多く、夏の帰国によって数週間の仕事量を調整しなければならない場合もあります。しかし同時に、この季節は特別な思い出を作る時期でもあります。最後のコンサート、送別会、卒業イベントなどは、一年間で築かれた人とのつながりを感じさせてくれます。

日本で国際的なコミュニティと働くことは、二つのカレンダーを同時に生きるようなものです。そして、その感覚こそが、日本でのフリーランス生活の一部なのかもしれません。
