Japan's Internet Cafés: More Useful Than You Might Think

One of the most useful—and somewhat underrated—facilities in Japan is the net café (ネットカフェ), also known as an Internet café or manga café (漫画喫茶). You can find them in many cities, especially Tokyo and Osaka, and they are much more than just places to use a computer.

Here are some situations where a Japanese net café can be surprisingly useful:

1. A place to rest while waiting for someone

   If you arrive early and have 30 minutes to an hour to kill before meeting a friend, a net café can be an excellent place to sit down and relax. Instead of waiting around at a train station or standing in a crowded café, you can have your own private booth.

2. Free drinks and ice cream

   Most net cafés offer free soft drinks, coffee, tea, and often even ice cream as part of the admission fee. You can simply sit back and help yourself.

3. Manga, movies, and entertainment

   You can read an enormous selection of Japanese manga for free during your stay. Many net cafés also provide computers and access to movies, games, and other digital entertainment.

4. You can sleep there

   If you are tired, you can simply recline your chair or use a private flat booth and take a nap. Some people even use net cafés as an extremely cheap place to spend the night. The main disadvantage is that they can be somewhat noisy, especially when other customers are coming and going.

5. Very cheap

   One of the biggest advantages is the price. Depending on the chain and location, 3–4 hours may cost only around ¥1,000–¥2,000, while short stays can sometimes cost less than ¥1,000 per hour. Considering that drinks, ice cream, manga, and other facilities are often included, it can be remarkably good value.

6. Easy to find in major cities

   Net cafés are not particularly difficult to find. There are plenty of them around major Japanese cities such as Tokyo and Osaka, often close to train stations and busy shopping districts.

7. Useful for travellers

   Net cafés can also be useful when travelling. For example, if you arrive in a city before your hotel check-in time, you can use one as a temporary place to sit down, rest, use the internet, and sometimes keep your luggage while you wait. This can be particularly convenient when you have several hours to kill between arriving in a city and checking into your hotel.

Overall, a Japanese net café is essentially a combination of a cheap lounge, manga library, entertainment centre, workspace, and sometimes even a makeshift sleeping place. Once you know about them, they can be an incredibly convenient option when travelling around Japan.
